Potty Training Tips

Putting your child in charge!

One of our clients shared how this best applies to her 24-month-old. “Jacob started going into the bathroom and closing the door. I knew he was about ready to toilet train. I would let him go in and use his potty, dump it into the big toilet, and put it up in the sink for me to rinse out. I rinsed it a few times and before you knew it he asked to do it by himself. We also used a timer and let him take the initiative each time it went off.” — Katie

Go Bare!

At home, let your child …peruse in the bare or a t-shirt.
Having no diaper or underwear on he’ll have no place to eliminate his pee or poop. Since she/he needs to put it somewhere you have a chance to direct them to the bathroom because the toilet would be a good idea! I am sure we all agree on this.
When she/he does put it in the potty, make sure you both have a good look and talk about it (yuck, I know, but the visual is important.). It‘s a great idea to talk about where the pee and pop go, over and over.

Flushing is important too. Kids can get so scared during the process, especially special needs children so make a huge deal by pointing at the swirling water while you both acknowledge and imitate the cool whooshing sound.

Potty Training Tips

Patience Is a Virtue

Yes, children can drive you nuts

Imagine being around a happy child who always listens to you, and does everything to make you happy. I think it would be a little weird. After all we are meant to guide these little beings in the way they should go and not treat them like soon to be adults.

Life as a parent is actually much more simpler than we make it to be.

Without the media’s influence, our friend and our personal agenda guilt tripping us, I think we may come to that near perfection. We would play all day, rest with our children and do house chores … you guessed well… with our children. Keep dreaming … real life is a bit different. I agree!

Children can be delightful, cute, funny, inspiring, and infinitely lovable...which makes it hard when we finally take in account how we feel (tired, upset, angry, etc).

So from one who’s been there, counseled hundreds of guilt-ridden, 'at the end of their rope parents, and had to learn to be more patient, here are some tips to help you parent your child with more patients during potty training or otherwise:

1) Give yourself a break

2) Count to ten and start again

3) Be patient with yourself

4) See the bigger picture

5) Rehearse being more patient
